Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple Like all the true McLaggen men, Brain is huge. He stands tall at six foot five and a half inches and is built like a wall. He's got wide shoulders and long legs, and he keeps himself in the best shape he possibly can, mostly because his pride won't let him get fat and lazy. He may have gotten his build from his father's side of the family, but the shape of his eyes, and the color of his hair, and even some of the freckles that appear across his back and shoulders during the summer months are straight from his mother. While his father has dark brown, almost black hair, Brain's hair is light, almost a sandy blonde, and while he's always kept it a bit more on the shaggier side, and recently has decided he's just not going to bother cutting it for a while, as he thinks he has more important things to worry about than the length of his hair. He almost never shaves off his facial hair, he's got a baby face and he knows that facial hair makes him look older, and he likes that. He does, however, keep it trimmed up rather than making himself look like a slob. His manner of dress is simple. Clean pants, a shirt without holes in it, and a pair of shoes that are solid and aren't falling apart on him. He never seems to be cold though. Even during the winter months, if he's wearing a longer sleeved shirt, it's almost always pushed up to his elbows, and it's not uncommon for him to run around the house in just a pair of shorts and a tank top. For one reason or another, Brain's not a sock guy, and tends to avoid wearing them as much as he possibly can. Even if it does make his feet reek a bit during the summer. PERSONALITY Adults are just obsolete children and the hell with them. Those who know Brian the best, know that there are times where he is without a question, his father's son. Brian loves to flirt and the challenge of the pursuit of a pretty lass, just further encouraging the family joke that all McLaggen men are hard wired like this. However unlike his father and grandfather, Brain has his limits. Married and taken women are off limits, and he's pretty good at recognizing a lost cause early on when he sees one. There are times when Brain is very loud, when something really makes him laugh, his booming laugh and can usually be heard from across a noisy room. Brain tends to wear a relaxed grin on his face, even if he's not thinking about it, which most of the time he isn't. He's an optimist, and tends to look on the positive side of things, and has a way of finding that silver lining when other's can't. His father likes to say that Brian is an old soul because of how emotionally stable Brian has always been. He goes with the flow and tends to rely on logic and draw from past experiences in his adult life. Brian wants to travel, and tends to take a very relaxed approach to it. He'll go wherever a do whatever there is to do there, the more local the better for him. Throughout his adventures around the world he's learned three valuable lessons that keep popping back up. 1. That he is very fortunate to be where he is in life. 2. This has only instilled his drive to help others more. 3. He hates Portugal. Along with that Brian has a very clear sense of what is right, and what is wrong. While, when he was younger he'd run right up to that line, but still not cross it, now, not so much. He's firm in his beliefs and will fight tooth and nail if he has to in order to stand by it. This can be sometimes problematic, as he tends to get a little tunnel visioned when he gets a little bogged down, but given time, this will wear off. When he does feel like making something into more than a one night stand, he tends to be a gentlemen, manners are not lost on him, he has his grandmother drilling that into his head from a very young age (after the first time he pulled a girl's hair because he thought she was cute). For someone as big as Brain, and as much as children are terrified of him at first, he's actually really good with kids. He's got a gentle nature about him and it tends to work well for him. It's part of the reason that his grandmother that started calling him the Gentle Giant as a joke. However, there is a catch with Brain, because he is not perfect and will grudgingly admit that he is one of the most stubborn people on the planet. Especially when it comes to his work. His "never say die" attitude tends to work against him because unlike when he's talking to women, he has a hard time figuring out when it is all a lost cause, and should do what is best for everyone, not just of himself. Brain has a temper, and while it may be on a log fuse, when it goes off, you really don't want to be anywhere near it. It comes out in a massive explosion and any trace of his verbal filter is no where to be found. Especially if you're thinned skinned because Brain takes his sweet time apologizing to people when he's been in the wrong. When he gets agitated or deeply annoyed with something he tends to just want to be left alone and not be around people. He appreciates his friends wanting to help, but the worst thing they could do is pester him, or try and force their way into getting him to talk about it. Eventually, when he's had enough time to deal with it on his own he might start to talk about it if its important enough but for the most part, he'll probably just drop it as if nothing happened. When he was old enough to understand his family situation it took him a while to figure out how he felt about it. On one hand, you really couldn't miss what you never had, and thanks to his grandmother and Caden and Mason's mothers he never really went without having that motherly figure in his life. However, there is still a part of him to this day that cannot for the life of him understand how one could give up their child. He understands that his mother is married to another man, and always had been. But he just doesn't understand why she didn't want any part of his life. And while in his adult life he's pretty much over it and it doesn't really affect his day to day, if it does come up it's one of the few things he refuses to talk about. The only way it really bleeds into his academic/career life is that he has a hard time dealing with the law when it comes to children. It tends to eat at him, thinking of all the bastards out there and what they're doing/not doing to children (and tends to take these things personally) and as a result the worst semester emotionally for him was when he had to take the Family Court Practice course. He passed just fine, with high grades, but he spent more time off by himself than not that semester. HISTORY I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees. I speak for the trees for the trees have no tongues. It wasn't love that brought Erin McEwan to Brennan McLaggen's door on a stormy winter's night. No, it was panic and sheer determination to make something right. Brennan McLaggen was a popular quidditch player for the Montrose Magpies and later Puddlemere United, and tended to use this to his advantage with the ladies. And it usually didn't just stop with witches. No, Brennan liked the challenges of swooning muggle women without the aide of his wizarding popularity. He ignored all of his mother's warnings about that type of behavior catching up with him, and decided to just keep doing what he was going to do. But, like a majority of things, he eventually found out that his mother was right. Using his charm and good looks, he was able to get Erin McEwan between the sheets...the married Erin McEwan between the sheets, and ended up creating a child together. Erin, who was already having marriage problems, decided to confess things to her husband and they were able to work out an arrangement, if at first for the son they already had together. As soon as the child was born, she would give it up to it's father. And that's exactly what happened, about a month before the baby was born, Erin sprung her little bombshell on Brennan who took it better than a lot of people suspected he would. Floored by the news, but seeing how there was nothing he could do to get out of it now, he did what he always did in a tough spot. Put his head down and just try and get through it as best he could. A short trip to a local hospital for the paternity test that proved Brennan was in fact the father later (since Erin was a muggle), he found himself at his parents house confessing to the whole thing. All the while trying to cope with the sudden blind panic that seemed to hit him. He spent the next month prepping his house as best he could for the baby, and getting over the constant panic that seemed to have settled itself into his chest. By the time the baby was born, Brennan still felt he wasn't ready to settle down and be a dad, but once he got that little boy in his arms, he at least felt as if he'd do anything to at least try and make it work. Growing up it was primarily just the two of them. Well, the two of them, a seeming endless stream of babysitters when he was younger, and his grandparents, Brian never really knew there was anything different about his family until he was a little older. About the time he turned four he started to ask about his mother, and why he didn't have one and Brennan tried to be honest with his son, but in the end just kept it vague until the boy was older and could understand a bit better. There was a small question if Brain was going to be a wizard or not (that is until his first sign of magic appeared when he was six), and after thinking about it, it was decided that Brian wouldn't go to the local primary school, but rather gain the foundation of his education from a friend of Brennan's who had done the same with her children before they went off to Hogwarts. To make sure that his son was able to develop social skills, Brain played football with some of the local kids in a league and Brennan showed up to every single match, and did his best to not hit on the good looking football mums that showed up, for his son's sake. When it came time for Brain to head off to Hogwarts, he was excited. He was going away to school, and he'd finally be able to meet other witches and wizards his age, and learn all sorts of things that seemed impossible and possible (only because he'd watched the adults he knew preform magic before) all at the same time. When the Sorting Hat was placed on his head it didn't take forever, but it wasn't quick about it either. At first he thought it might be just because his father, and grandparents had been in Gryffindor that he'd be placed there. But the Sorting Hat saw Brain's bravery, determination, and even his fool heartedness to an extent and it he was proclaimed a Gryffindor. Once in his house, it took all of a week for Brain to warm up to his dorm mates. After that, he didn't look back. He tried a few times for the house team, but for one reason or another, he just didn't posses the same flying skills as his father and grandmother. Which was fine by him, he'd rather be in the stands cheering away anyhow. He did join the dueling club for a while and was even a named a Prefect his fifth year, marking the first time that a McLaggen had been a Prefect...ever (And a rather a large shock as Brain would have put all his money on Caden getting it rather than himself). But for the most part Brain was just content with hanging out with his mates, and avoiding homework when he didn't feel like doing it. Brain wasn't the greatest at school work, but he wasn't a complete dullard either. He knew what he strong suits were and tended to stick to them. Because of that being an Auror, Healer, or Unspeakable was pretty much out of the question, as they only took the best and brightest. He thought briefly about becoming a Curse Breaker, and in fact, made sure that he got all the marks that would allow him into that area of study at Eolas during his Seventh Year. However, at the end of his Seventh Year, after pushing himself to make those grades, Brain was a little more than burnt out on the whole academic thing. So he did what every somewhat responsible seventeen year old would do. Grabbed a backpack, filled it up with as many useful things as he could, got the go head from his dad, grabbed a few buddies and he spent the next year or so traveling around the world. It was a different kind of education, and one that he became increasingly aware of how lucky he was that he was able to do it. After his travels ended he took up a job working at Zanzibar!, trying to figure out what he wanted to do with his life. After a few years of this he finally decided to enroll into Eolas (much to his family's relief). Thanks to the grades he'd worked hard to achieve and his "worldly" experience he was admitted into the Curse Breaking Program. However, it only took one class in Magical Law, which he only took to fulfill a general education requirement to turn his head in another direction. After that semester, Brain changed his major and was admitted into the Goodfellow College of Magical Law, and he really felt as if this was the perfect fit for him. As he studied he became more passionate about Civil Law and representing those who couldn't afford the help, and making sure that everyone has the opportunity to be represented under the law. Now, approaching his final year, and after completing his internship at the Hogsmeade Civic's Office, working along side other public defenders, Brain seems to be both in a hurry to finish up this year so he can take his final exam to get accredited, and slowing things down a bit and really enjoying his last year of school as well. | ![]() Brian Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened. Brian never knew his mother growing up, and as a child he used to wonder about her, but now as a man, he could care less about her. The way he sees it is that if she didn't want to take an interest in her own son, then he shouldn't waste any time or effort into finding out about his mother's life. Raised by a single father, naturally Brian and Brennan are close as any father and son. Brian doesn't remember the years Brennan spent growing up in order to raise his son, but somewhere down the line in the last few years, his dad has slowly stopped being his da and being more of a friend. He always wished he had siblings, but he didn't have trouble finding friends to fill that void, and still doesn't. Mason Scott and Caden Moran fill that void nicely, and Brian honestly views them as the brothers that he never. • Makes a pretty mean pasta sauce from scratch. • He is the eggman. He is the Walrus. • Boxers. Always boxers. • His middle name was almost "Wallace" to give him a piece of his mother's family, but Brennan decided last minute to ditch that idea and named him after his Great-Uncle instead.
